On the Geography of Knowledge Sourcing: a Typology of Mne Subsidiaries
نویسندگان
چکیده
The competence-exploiting subsidiaries of MNEs extend and adapt for local conditions competencies that were previously developed by their parent companies. In contrast, competence-creating subsidiaries broaden the profiles of competence of their corporate groups. Competence-creating subsidiaries are likelier to source knowledge from their own local environment. We distinguish between ‘sticky’ technologies whose development is highly location-specific, and ‘slippery’ technologies that draw upon knowledge from a wide geographical span. We find that competence-creating subsidiaries are especially highly focused on the development of sticky technologies, and that these rely on a relatively autonomous (intra-sectoral) learning and a high degree of sectoral focus.

MNE subsidiaries’ outsourcing and insourcing of R&D: The role of local institutions
Plain language summary: The rules for business vary not only between countries, but within countries. Subsidiaries of multinational enterprises (MNEs) thus have to consider both the national level and the local context when designing their business practices. To examine this impact, we study R&D outsourcing in four Eastern member states of the European Union, and find that local R&D outsourcing...

متن کاملWhen To Localize? Integration And Responsiveness In Subsidiaries In Transition Economies
The Integration-Responsiveness framework with the typology of international, multidomestic, global and transnational MNE strategies has become a standard in strategic management textbooks. Yet, despite this popularity, surprisingly little evidence exists for under which conditions each type of strategy is most appropriate. This paper revisits the typology using a contingency approach to derive ...

It is found that the extent to whic...
